Script Salon | Fringe Script Tease

The lineup for the annual Script Salon Fringe Script Tease on Sunday, August 2 at 7:30PM is below and features 15 excerpts from plays by Alberta playwrights at Fringe Unforgettable, the 45^th Edmonton International Fringe Festival, running August 13 – 23.

SCRIPT SALON is presented on Sunday, August 2, at 7:30PM in the Upper Arts Space at Holy Trinity Anglican Church (10037 84 Avenue). Doors open at 7PM.

Shams by Rumi by Moemen Gaafar 

Playwright-director duo Galal and Husam are nearing their big break, but Galal’s life whirls out of control when he meets smart, charming Shams. From High Fives at Zero Theatre (Last Perfect Game, Checked Out) this new play by Moemen Gaafar (2025 Genesis ★★★★) re-imagines the Persian poet Rumi’s relationship with Shams Tabrizi. FlyBoy: From There and Back Again by Devon Tayler 

It all started four years ago when my family opened a box and my father’s voice spilled out. Based on his 1985 audio tapes and handwritten notes, FlyBoy tells the compelling true story of John Edward Tayler from young pilot to WWII veteran. Confirmed Bachelor by Clayton James-Plamondon and Erin Leflar 

A fast-paced, original Regency-era romantic comedy. Miss Eliza is eyeing up the catch of the season despite her aunt’s guidance that he tends to prefer the company of men! The following cross-dressing scheme leads to a wild journey of lies, mishaps, humour and perhaps, even love.… (Sugar Swing Ballroom, Venue #26)

The Butter Chicken Odyssey by Ramneek Singh 

What began as a ​“dumb food project” for Edmonton-born Punjabi food writer Ramneek Singh became a two-year, fifty-restaurant chase through the city’s butter chicken spots. Beneath the laughs and disasters sits a story about immigrant trauma, assimilation, and trying to find yourself in the meals people carry across oceans. (Acadia Hall, Venue #5)

Seanchai by Gavin Bradley 

When Fionn, a young writer, visits Siobhan, a retired Seanchaí (shawn-uh-key, Irish Oral Storyteller) to get some tips on how to tell a good story, he gets more of a lesson than he bargained for. As the two trade tales of Irish heroes like Cú Chulainn and Fionn mac Cumhaill, they begin to explore the importance of stories in shaping what we remember, and in helping us come to terms with what we forget. I Ain’t No Ingénue but I (used to) Sing Like One by Christie Mawer 

Dreams don’t always happen when — or how — we planned. But sometimes they come back around… even after 30 years. I Ain’t No Ingénue is a new musical revue about second chances, aging out of ingénue roles, and finding your way back to the spotlight. And seriously … WTF is an ingénue anyway? (Walterdale, Venue #4)

Jeff & Grungled KNOW FRILLS by Rainier Pearl-Styles and Nicholas Chieffo 

Meet Jeff and Grungled. They certainly know frills, but do they know how to be men? KNOW FRILLS is a duo comedy show about masculinity beyond patriarchy. During a chaotic trip to the local grocery store, Jeff and Grungled battle the deluge of unspoken rules, riddles, and regiments of manhood, all while trying to find the produce aisle. Journey with these two wannabe gentlemen through a hilarious and topical dissection of the roles we all manifest, and don’t forget your reusable bags! (Mile Zero Dance, Venue #20)

Fetch by Cat Walsh 

Hannah Morgan is the youngest of five. Hannah Morgan is an only child. Hannah Morgan has a happy family. Hannah Morgan is orphaned and alone. Hannah Morgan pursues and is pursued by a small toy dog. A play from award-winning playwright Cat Walsh about possible existences, identity, and the battle to become the real Hannah Morgan. (Acacia Hall, Venue #5)

Nerina and the Sea Sprites by Zoe Hawnt 

A Cinderella-themed, folklore-style musical about a young underwater sea sprite as she discovers her own strength and becomes a successful entrepreneur. (Holy Trinity Bliss Stage, Venue #23)

Alex & Michael & Hannah by Heather Morrow 

Hannah is alone at a nightclub when the manager —bisexual Alex — asks for her number. Hannah isn’t married, to the annoyance of her conservative family and engaged sister, Kathy. Alex then meets a model named Michael. Michael and Hannah genuinely like each other too! But Kathy makes it clear to the threesome that they aren’t ​“normal.” The outside world and her self-doubt make Hannah pick between her family and her partners. (Gateway Theatre, Venue #6)

Object of Divinity by Calla Wright 

An abstract puppet play about the life of the Public Universal Friend, a genderless prophet from the 1770s. With an omnipresent industrial score composed and performed by producer SILKRØAD, it is a visual, poetic piece about gender, divinity, and object-hood, from the writer of The Alberta Hospital for the Insane, Fringe 2025. (Nordic Studio Theatre, Venue #3)

H.A.G.S. by Donna Call 

Looking for a raunchy, gaunchy, paunchy love letter to getting older? As the H.A.G.S. celebrate Dru’s ​‘special’ Spawn Day, their greatest rivals wait ominously in the wings. Will the twaddle twittle? Will the riddle rattle? As they dance from danger into your hearts, only their hairdresser knows for sure. (Walterdale, Venue #4)

A Hellmark Christmas Musical Parody by David Son 

A hilarious, unhinged new musical about a driven city executive returning to her magical hometown for Christmas, reconnecting with a handsome tree farmer, her childhood best friend, her loving mother, and then discovering the season’s spirit is kept alive by ritualistic blood sacrifices.
