Battle River Interlude

William H. Webb // 1992

Acrylic on Canvas

This artwork is a photorealistic representation of a prairie landscape rendered in acrylic on canvas. The artist is a landscape painter who refers to his work as stylistically representing a painterly realism”. Viewing one of Webb’s paintings up close reveals dots, dashes and flicks of paint along with washes galore, a far cry from the more hard-edged style of photo realists. His work references the technical methods used in watercolour and etching practices. Texture plays a large role in Webb’s landscape paintings – paying extra attention to create a tactile image of the many deep ruts along the snow-covered plains, with pops of bright golden grass peeking through. Webb has an affinity for the wide-open spaces of Alberta, and through his work he looks to uncover the possibilities and dashed hopes of a bumpy prairie road.
