Day Map / Night Map references the spirit of movement and city life. Each map features a tangle of pathways along a winding river. Among the paths are a variety of structures, buildings, objects, plants, sculptures, shapes, textures and colours — both familiar and curious. Day Map is bright and green, reminiscent of a playful, activity-packed summer day in Edmonton. Night Map has a moody blue palette, accented by cloud-like shapes that illuminate the objects behind them in vivid hues — reminiscent of glowing windows and bright lights punctuating a dark nighttime scene. Like a city transit map describing day and night routes, Day Map and Night Map share a visual structure and architecture, but present distinct routes — and personalities — from day to night. Transit users waiting for a connection can follow along the paths and objects, developing private narratives within this imaginary River City, as one would within a real city. The river, with its cropped line, invites the viewer to imagine life and place beyond the border of the map.
