New Methods for Black Canadian Art History: Yaniya Lee

Join Mitchell Art Gallery for New Methods for Black Canadian Art History, a talk by writer Yaniya Lee in conjunction with the MAG’s new exhibition, New Routes: threads across space and time.

The exhibition reflects Raneece Buddan, AJA Louden, Garfield Morgan, and Elsa Robinson’s investigations of how their paths as diasporic people connect their distinct artistic practices. Lee wrote an essay to accompany the exhibition, having contributed to many of the artists’ conversations during the development of this project. 

Yaniya Lee is the author of Selected Writing on Black Canadian Art (2024) and Buseje Bailey: Reasons Why We Have to Disappear Every Once in a While, A Black Art History Project (2024).

As a graduate student at Queen’s University, Lee experimented with Black Studies approaches to Art History. Her projects include the Black Canadian Art History Scholarship Database (blackart​study​.ca) and Doing the Work: Selected Syllabi (grey​zoneped​a​go​gies​.com).

Lee has taught and written about art for universities, museums, and institutions across North America and Europe, including Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, de Appel Amsterdam, Dutch Art Institute, Momus, Toronto Biennial of Art, Queen’s University, and University of Toronto. Her writing has appeared in Racar: Canadian Art Review, Public Journal, Asia Art Archive, C Magazine, Flash Art, Justsmile, and Montez Press.
