In 2004, to commemorate its centenary, the City of Edmonton Emergency Response Department commissioned a giant mural. Artist Maggie Ray Morris was commissioned to create a painting that depicts the department’s history, tradition, progress, and excellence in service. A digital print was reproduced from the original painting and installed on the south exterior wall. The original painting is housed in the Fire Station #1 boardroom.

The artist wrote, What a wonderful challenge … bring the history of black and white to colour, the ups and downs of life, has been an ongoing pursuit of my work, whether for a mural, portrait painting, or my own history period. The quick response of the men and women of service have meant a great deal to my family. Therefore, I have a vested interest to make this painting say something to everyone, young, old, sick, or well … a celebration of all that is good about our fire and emergency response departments.” (Maggie Ray Morris, February 232004)
