AJA Louden // 2025

Balwin Park Playground

Balwin Playground is currently under construction and will open fall of 2025!

What if in the future, we grew playgrounds from seeds?”

Created by artist AJA Louden, Edmonton’s first artist-designed playground is the 300th artwork in the City of Edmonton Public Art Collection. The Balwin Playground is inspired by nature and science fiction. It is a place to play, to grow together and to imagine the future. Piney P, a playful pineapple character created by the artist, is the protector of the playground as he stands tall at the centre of it all.

After exploring many concepts, AJA Louden found that he was drawn to the idea of a strange seed landing from another place and time to make its home here on the Prairies and ultimately growing into a fun playground for kids. Along with nature, AJA took inspiration from his Jamaican-Canadian roots and those of Indigenous cultures who place importance on drumming. Looking at creating a social experience, AJA integrated a drumming circle into the design of the playground to encourage kids to drum together.

Wrote the artist of Piney P, He was inside the seed at the centre of the park when it landed, and has made his home here on the Prairies. He may look a little tough on the outside, but he’s full of love (and mischief…he’s hiding all over this playground!).”

Seeds, like people, sometimes travel far to grow in a new place. Like a garden, a healthy environment is key for growth. Caring for and collaborating with nature, and one another, will create a world where we can all live together in balance.”
