About
Featuring spiralling bubble-like patterns, Breathe I & II are a pair of murals along the corridor linking the Peter Hemingway Aquatic Centre with the Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre. Complementing the artist’s preexisting poolside mural, Flux (2008), the new set of artworks was similarly designed using the artist’s creative tool of choice, the childhood toy Super Spirograph.
The compositions for Breathe I & II are comprised of a single decorative circular form that comes from multiple Spirograph drawings. The form is suggestive of a molecule, a bubble or a symbol of energy. The repeating form is organized across the surfaces, following the mathematical configuration of the Fibonacci sequence.
Shared the artist, “Playing with the size of the forms and colour variations, my intention was to develop two contrasting images: one suggesting an energy of expansion and the other of contraction. Metaphorically representing the dynamic movement of inhaling and exhaling.”
