About
Unveiled in September 1980, this carved mahogany canopy was presented on behalf of the citizens of Edmonton to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the inauguration of the province of Alberta. During the presentation, Mayor Cec Purves noted the special relationship that Edmonton has to the province, saying “The honour of being the capital city is one which we may not often acknowledge, and yet it is an honour of which we are always aware.” Originally placed over the Speaker’s Chair in the Legislative Assembly Chamber, the canopy now lives inside Chancery Hall.
The intricate carving seen in the mahogany canopy is the work of local artist Paul Van Imschoot. The carving depicts both the wild rose, symbolic of Alberta, and the marigold, symbolic of the City of Edmonton.
