@ St Joseph's Basilica // 3:00 pm

Ticketed Event

Join the Schola Cantorum of St Joseph’s Basilica for their presentation of Palestrina 500: Missae Papae Marcelli on Sunday, June 15 at 3pm (doors at 2:30pm) at St Joseph’s Basilica (10044 113 St NW).

Celebrating the 500th anniversary of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina’s birth, the Schola Cantorum of St Joseph’s Basilica, directed by Roderick Bryce, perform his pivotal Missa Papae Marcelli in the incomparable acoustics of the beautiful St Joseph’s Cathedral-Basilica.

Palestrina, considered the saviour of Renaissance Polyphony from the reforming zeal of the Council of Trent, was said to have had the Missa Papae Marcelli dictated to him by angels. This famous six-voice Mass is presented alongside other large-scale motets and some contemporary music by Scottish composer James MacMillan.

The 8‑voice professional Schola Cantorum of St Joseph’s Basilica is the leading cathedral choir in Western Canada. For this concert, the ensemble is augmented by an extra six voices of the top singers in Edmonton.
